Pancake Breakfast

Since the N.E. Kitfox Fly-in got washed out, Howie and I decided to join up with some buddies for a breakfast at FZY, Oswego County NY.

Here is his Kitfox 4-1200, pre-flight done, gassed and ready to go.

If you share a hanger and fold the wings each time, a tail jack/dolly like this makes things a lot quicker/easier. Works great!

Wheels up 0730 from D38, Canandaigua NY, that's Canandaigua Lake off the right side.

What a beautiful morning for flight, see the 172 passing on the right?

We might not be the 1st plane in the group but the Jab2200 sure does run smooth.

Downwind 33 Oswego with the deck closing in!

Looks like the soup starts right at the end of the runway.

Piece of cake, plenty of room.

Well OK, a little hot = a little wide, oops!

Like most 'foxes she's a real floater over 55mph, missed the 1st turnoff LOL.

Great weather plus the lure of fresh hot coffee, all-you-can eat fluffy pancakes or french toast with butter and maple syrup, lotsa sausage, ham steaks, bacon, eggs and hash browns - did I mention BACON? Yum! It brings folks together every time. :)

Pancake Breakfast (con't)

Typical variation of small certified and experimental planes attending. If you think the S.T.O.L leading edge slats on a Czech CH701 look a little wierd, how about on a 4-place low-wing cruiser. Do you know what it is?

Tried to snap this 1930's-something Curtis Robin as we taxied by. You may recall an aviator named 'Wrong Way Corrigan' who flew a Curtis Robin from Long Beach, CA to NY in the '30s. He flight plan was to return to Long Beach but he took off from NY, flew across the Atlantic and landed in Ireland! He helped build Lindburgh's Spirit of St Louis but had been denied earlier permission to make a nonstop flight from New York to Ireland of his own. While his "navigational error" was seen as deliberate, he never publicly admitted to having flown to Ireland intentionally.

AvGas was $5.10 ($1.20 cheaper than home) and the sun was shining so we decided to top off and take the long way back.

Full bellies + full fuel + smooooth air = Happy Pilots

That's the southern shore of Lake Ontario and Ginna Nuclear Power Plant cooling tower at over the right shoulder.

Flying around the town of Fulton, NY. My float buddies splash in the lake for a short walk to a super fish fry joint on a regular basis.

About two million years ago, glacial flows carved deep trenches in the earth leaving long, narrow, high-walled lakes and deep gorges in their wake. This is northern tip of Cayuga Lake, deepest of the NY Finger Lakes if I am not mistaken. The Native Americans who lived in this area believed the Finger Lakes were the fingerprints of the Great Spirit, who reached down and, in touching the earth, transformed this land into sacred ground, blessed by Nature. Who am I to argue?

Ah well, all good things come to an end, downwind 13 Canandaigua.

post-53-13158614285546_thumb.jpg

Turning to Base, maintaining 75mph in the pattern.

Final with 1/2 flaps, landing on the grass.

Looks like a DAMN good day to me! A great excuse to fly are the EAA breakfasts! I wish our chapter was ALOT more active than it is.

That low winger got me stumped... and I am not gonna cheat and look up the N number either!

65mph over the fence (yes it's there!) and roadway.

post-53-1315864742225_thumb.jpg

The grass is ~15' below the roadway over the gravel pile.

post-53-13158647935319_thumb.jpg

The AgCats used to use this grass strip but got kicked off for rutting it up years ago, you can really see the up slope in this shot.

Amazing, another short wing death trap and it's pilot made it back from breakfast in one piece.

Just as we got parked, another friend was bringing his Pitts in so I walked over to say hello.

Look what else is parked there...

Here's a pic of the Extra 330 cockpit.

post-53-13158654063421_thumb.jpg

I could live in this double back-to-back hanger setup!

post-53-1315865469418_thumb.jpg

Sharing the same hanger are a Kitfox III and Kitfox IV-1200, he's hoping his sons take an interest.

post-53-13158656615665_thumb.jpg

Well, it was a fun day and I had the camera so I figured you might enjoy some pics! :)

The things I would do to that 330 if I had an hour alone with it.... I would make a new york hooker blush

Thanks for the pictures Doug.
